Nrityotsav 2015: A Journey into Disparate Truth, Beauty, and Divinity
Indian aesthetics is a unique canvas that unites not just the vast Indian subcontinent but also the influences of world cultures into distinct and sublime art forms. Indian classical dance can transport you into magical lands and take you through your own journey as a rasika. Experience this unique journey at Nrityotsav 2015 where “east meets west” is embodied in our spectacular lineup.
In a stunning fusion of Bharatanatyam and Spanish folklore, Shijith Krishna and his Kalakshetra-trained group chase windmills and weave romantic tales as the story of Don Quixote unfolds. The famous 17th century Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes is adapted into a living breathing movement by the Sahrdaya Foundation of Chennai (India).
Innovation is at the heart of classical dance. A continuously evolving body that has great minds like Rukmini Devi Arundale, Uday Shankar, Birju Maharaj, Kelucharan Mohapatra, to name a few, have moved us towards new horizons. Although some of these stalwarts are no longer with us, their innovation and heritage lives on. Witness one such legacy in the Odissi dance presentation through the Mohapatra lineage as Sujata Mohapatra and the Guru Shradha group from California enthrall and captivate you.
From here, our journey heads north, to Sattriya, the jewel of Assam. The Sattriya Dance Company from Pennsylvania brings to life the lilting notes and sensual movements of the hills.
If this lineup is not exciting in itself, we also have Classical Dance Competitions for talented young dancers from the New England showcasing their learning and passion of Indian classical dance.
Nrityotsav aims to not just witness innovation but engender it, by bringing together all forms classical dance to a common stage. We aspire to stir the creative juices of dancers and connoisseurs alike, providing a platform to appreciate, learn, grow and innovate.
